The Marowitz Hamlet
Did you ever imagine what thoughts, emotions, and memories must have flowed through Hamlet?s shattered mind as he lay dying in Horatio?s arms?? Charles Marowitz, acclaimed stage director and playwright, has created a free-adaptation of the great Shakespeare play which does precisely that.? This version unfolds in a stream of consciousness fashion, like the glimpses of rapid memory flashes in Hamlet?s final moments:? Characters appear on stage at random, and then disappear, as Hamlet?s mind conjures up his memories of them, and imaginings of the events that preceded his death.?? Marowitz has drastically shortened Hamlet for this version, taking the venerable five-act, four-hour story down to about 90 minutes, inter-cutting characters, scenes, and events with one another, while leaving the plot intact.? This is not your father?s Hamlet, but a post-modern, remixed version.
The Directors
Rebecca C. Blum directs The Marowitz Hamlet, assisted by Lucinda Gainey, Jason Bailey, and Ashley Clos.?? Usually found on stage, this is Rebecca?s first venture in directing since attending Meredith College in the 1990s.? Over the past 15 years, you may have seen her in productions with many local companies.? Most recently, she was a third of the all-female cast of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [revised] with Raleigh Little Theatre and Actors Comedy Lab.? Jason Bailey (Fight Director), a stage combat and stunt enthusiast, has also worked with Bare Theatre, NRACT, and Burning Coal.? His Altercation Pictures short films have screened at FilmSpark and the Carrboro Film Festival.? ?Ashley Clos (Music Director) recently appeared as Kate Cooper in the hiSTORYstage production of Saint George and the Dragon.
The Cast
Clint Leinau (Hamlet) recently appeared as Saint George in the hiSTORYstage production of Saint George in the Dragon, and is currently an afterschool counselor at North Chatham Elementary.? Stephanie Rinehart (Ophelia) most recently appeared as Princess Ivy in Saint George and the Dragon, Raleigh Little Theater?s The Man Who Came to Dinner, and Historic Interpretations? short film Let Tyrants Fear.? Justin Mejia (Fortinbras) is the co-founder of Dead Red Eyes, an independent film production company.? John Minervino (Laertes) debuts in his first hiSTORYstage production after appearing in Cary High School?s A Midsummer Night?s Dream. ?Sarah J. Schmitt (Gertrude) has played dozens of roles ranging from a homicidal nun to Portia in The Merchant of Venice, most recently appearing as The Doctor in Saint George and the Dragon.? R. Alex Davis (Claudius) ?recently undertook the solo performance Schizocity, a devised-theater adaptation of Zachary Mason?s Lost Books of the Odyssey in New York.? Wayne Burtoft (King Hamlet?s Ghost) usually is to be found amongst ?The Unintentionals, a comedy group focused on the art of improvisational acting in the short-form style.? Diana McQueen (Rosencrantz) counts Jo March in Little Women, Germaine in Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and Dr. Jason Posner, ?M.D. in Wit amongst her previous roles.? Ruth Berry (Guildenstern) normally works as a freelance Props Designer for area theatres, but has been seen as Princess Lenya in Raleigh Little Theatre?s Cinderella, Miss Valooosh in Sideways Stories from Wayside School, and as Snug in Cary Player?s A Midsummer Night?s Dream.? Seth Blum (Clown / Polonius) has earned praise for his work with many local companies including, Bare Theatre, Raleigh Little Theater, Raleigh Ensemble Players, and Theatre In The Park.? Jorge Ivan Santos (Captain / Doctor) appeared as John Finney in Saint George and the Dragon, and also several of his own original one-act plays, and short films.
